Zen had been developed with a service orientated architecture, enabling flexible and scalable implementation, unique to every telecoms operator. The solution architecture comprises four major components, responsible for data mediation, data visualisation, data automation and complex data correlation.
Zen Integrate is the data mediation and storage component of Zen. Data is collected in real-time from any network domain, vendor, technology or third party software and pushed into a HP Vertica database, maintaining live and historical data in a single system.
Zen Insight is the visualisation and reporting component of Zen. Users are provided with scheduled reports and live, interactive dashboards that are customised to meet the end-user requirement.
Zen Impulse is the automated monitoring and alerting component of Zen. Users can create their own automated alerts for SLA breaches and QoS degradations. Remedial actions can also be automated to raise a trouble ticket or to immediately rectify a network fault
Zen Intellect is the intelligent data correlation component of Zen. Using performance, fault and topology data, it enables service modelling, root cause analysis, cross domain correlation, service impact analysis and customer impact analysis.
Zen has an exceptional graphical user interface that gives users functionality not found in other tools sets. Zen automatically sorts and labels data sources into recognisable formats, which can then be ‘dragged and dropped’ into new and existing reports and dashboards. Dashboards can easily be edited with interactive graphs, tables, maps etc. to provide relevant insights into network performance, quality of service and quality of experience.
Zen’s graphical interface also provides users with the functionality to create automatic alerts based upon defined performance thresholds and deviations. The guided process enables users of all levels to define individual performance breaches, trigging an in-application alert, email or SMS. The Zen technology also allows for automated remedial actions based upon a defined performance breach, for example automatically restarting a network node.

Zen operates in both physical and virtual environments, along with the heterogeneous networks that are common today. This flexibility means that Zen can support CSPs throughout every stage of their journey towards network function virtualisation.
During the first stages of NFV transformation, CSPs must monitor both physical and virtual environments side-by-side as their hybrid network evolves. To support this, virtual infrastructure monitoring is incorporated into the wider Zen Operational Intelligence implementation. The software mediates data from both legacy Element Management Systems (EMS) and the Network Function Virtualisation Infrastructure (NFVI) layer.
As CSPs progress further on their NFV journey, their OSS/BSS software must support automation and orchestration via direct communication with the NFV orchestrator (NFVO). Zen has been architected in a service orientated manner with highly flexible functionality to permit direct input and output to and from the NFVO. This enables two-way automatic actions such as the integration of a new performance management parameter, or automatic scale-up/scale-down of data interfaces.
